Ok, so you know how we all live in perfect houses, with freshly manicured lawns, none of our pets shed and our kids don't tornado the house every 11 minutes?
Exactly.
I have a very dear friend, and her very dear mother and I were talking about this "I can't have anyone over till my house is spotless and I can't seem to keep my house spotless so I'll just stop having people over" syndrome. I for one am tired of it! I keep my house, sort of clean. I mean, sure, we get stacks of mail that camp out on the kitchen island for weeks at a time. There are perpetual mounds of toys that never seem to stay in the toy room. Our beds are not made, sinks are not empty, but come on! Anyone else out there willing to admit this?!
But when we have people over, all the visible areas (living room, kitchen, bathroom) are promptly cleaned, waxed and buffed as if that is how it always looks! I may even throw in a little , excuse the mess! As if I didn't spend an hour picking up...puh-lease.
But my closest friends, the ones who know me inside and out and haven't been scared off? Those are the ones that see the real house! Those are the ones who I can have a sink full of dishes, stacks of mail, laundry in the living room and be totally cool having them stop by for a while. Why don't we let our guards down more? I mean, if we all let people see how we really lived, we would see how they really live and we'd all be a little more comfortable in our own skin. You know?
Ok.
So now I'm going to stand up from the couch, and take a picture of my living room exactly how it is right now. I promise not to clear out a thing.
See, I mean it's messy but it's not disgusting. right?
So join me. Invite a friend over, don't apologize for the mess and just...leave it.
Fun post! But I'm not gonna post pics of my living room... lol! - Mandy W!
ReplyDeleteYou can drop by my messy house anytime. It will make you feel better. :)
ReplyDeleteI discovered long ago that if I didn't invite people over on a regular basis my house would never get REALLY clean. That's why I try to have people over every week.
Totally not disgusting!! Every time I think I have a handle on the mess, Emilia pulls out something new. I'm with you!!
ReplyDeleteI notice you didn't post the kitchen :). I agree with Heather, though. I often use people coming over as an excuse to do the good cleaning that needs to be done more :). Though I agree- we should be a little more authentic so everyone knows it can't always be clean. I have seen your apartment in college...I know you are not always clean :).
ReplyDeleteHaha! Anytime you are in Nashville, come on over! I pick up, but my house is certainly not scrubbed to perfection, and usually looks about like yours. I do clean when people come over, but if anyone doesn't like me for my "take it as it is" home, then oh well!!
