A little too much drama.

Well let me start by saying we had a great visit with the John's family!  They babysat a LOT and treated us to many yummy dinners!

On their last night here, Friday, John, his mom, Winston and I all went for a walk in the park after Will was asleep.  We decided to stop at the grocery store for some ice cream on the way home.  John got out to run in and I asked Brenda if she would like to drive by her younger son's girlfriend's apartment while we waited. (She lived very close and who doesn't like to spy on their son a little??)

So we run across the street to see where she lives and as soon as we turn into the main entrance, my headlights swing around and I see something (big) in the road.  Brenda yelled to watch out and just as I sarted swerving we realized it was a person!  She says "It's a HUMAN!!!!" and I say "AAAAAAHHHHHH!!!"

We both jumped out (Brenda had her head together enough to tell me to put my hazards on) and I called 911 and she immediately started talking to and assessing this 20-something year old girl who is curled up in the street.  I hear Brenda say "She was hit by a car!!" and I'm already flagging down the next passing car and begging them to stay with us.

Ok the cops.  So they roll in, having heard of a rowdy, very intoxicated and argumentative group of people that have just left a mexican restaurant down the street and they were looking for them.  They asked us if any of us saw cars (no) or people (no).  They pull out the girls id and start to try to ask her questions.  She's in and out now, sometimes answering sometimes not.

I'm realizing the story has changed a little now, she wasn't hit by a car, she was pushed out.  She's probably concussed, but also drunk.  Still, she hit the pavement with such force that not only did her shoes fly off (20 ft in different directions), she has completely skinned up shoulders and arms, and there's a small pool of blood coming from something under her back.  SO, maybe she made some bad choices on a friday night, but in my eyes she is still the victim and needs not only medical attention but also compassion.

She starts to ask us to let go of her, that she wants to lay back on her side, (I'm still on the phone, no paramedics yet, but I'm holding her hand), and everyone around her is telling her no, they need to keep her still.  Totally true.  She starts to argue, that her back and neck don't hurt, she just wants to lay on her side.  The police officer gets about 6" from her face with his flashlight and screams (in his best movie-jerk-cop-voice) "Do you want us to help you or not?!"  What?  Come on man, this girl doesn't need that.  She is scared and in pain.  And yes, possibly just caused some kind of disturbance at a local restaurant, but NOW, she needs help!  So I say "Please don't yell at her." in a very calm, quiet voice so that no one else could hear me.  And he stops.  And starts yelling at me.  (finger in face) "Don't you tell me how to do my job!!  Don't you for a second tell me how to do my job!!!"  So this guy is nuts.  And kind of a jerk.  So I didn't talk to him anymore.

A few minutes later the fire truck arrives, they have the neck thingies and back boards and the ambulance arrived soon after.  Brenda and I took a big breath and stayed till she was all strapped in.  They got Brenda's DL and ssn, since we were first on the scene (and I was totally driving w/o my license--lesson learned!) We talked with some other bystanders and when there was space, we left.

I had dreams that night that we came home and there were alligators coming out of our garage and I had to call 911 again!!  Anyway, I am sure this girl ended up ok, hopefully she breaks up with the dude who pushed her out of the car.  More posts to follow to tell about our in-law visit!
